Description

Kabuki dance performance of the dance Tadanobu from the kabuki piece Yoshitsune senbon zakura (Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees). At Barnes Hall, Cornell University, October 6, 2010. In the scene the warrior Tadanobu accompanies his master Yoshitsune's betrothed Shizuka Gozen through the hills of the Yoshino district. Tadanobu however is actually a fox spirit who follows the hand drum carried by Shizuka. In this dance the warrior Tadanobu recounts an earlier battle between the Heike warrior Kagekiyo and the Genji warrior Miyonoya no Shiro. The dance is a good example of a narrative dance (katarimono) wherein a character enacts a story they are telling.
