This essay reviews the subsequent careers of Indonesian Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia, TNI) officers who served in East Timor during the height of the violence there, an action that left at least 1,500 East Timorese dead and hundreds of thousands displaced. A list of TNI officers supplements the essay, recording available details about each officer’s post, history of service, religion, place of origin, the charges leveled in court against particular individuals, when applicable, and the results of those court contests. The author concludes that the engagement of a number of these military men in politics since 1999 “and their candidacies for elected office are cause for concern.”
