No METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: This data is part of the manuscript "Adverse effects of inbreeding on the transgenerational expression of herbivore-induced defense traits in Solanum carolinense". The manuscript explores how the inbreeding status of maternal Solanum carolinense plants influences the transgenerational effects of Manduca sexta herbivory on the defensive traits and herbivore resistance of offspring. Plants in this study were from three family lines (A5, A7, and B9), were inbred (S) and outbred (X) maternal lines, and were or were not subjected to feeding damage by Manduca sexta caterpillars (DAM = Damaged and UD = Undamaged). Breeding status in each file is denoted as "inbred" or "outbred" and caterpillar herbivory treatments are denoted as "damaged" or "undamaged". Each file contains data on traits measured in plant offspring or on M. sexta performance. Each filename corresponds to the trait in the dataset. Plant traits measured included leaf trichomes, internode spine density, mass, and length, constitutive and induced emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), jasmonic acid (JA) concentrations, and the expression of three JA-associated genes allene oxide synthase (AOS), lipoxygenase (LOX), and oxophytodienoate reductase 3 (OPR3). Caterpillar traits measured included total leaf area consumed, larval mass gain and relative growth rate (RGR), survivorship, days to pupation and eclosion, and pupa and moth mass.
